The 1999–2000 season was one of transition for Parma under Alberto Malesani. While hopes of winning their first Serie A title remained high, the team fell short, finishing 5th in the league. Hernán Crespo was the standout performer once again, scoring 22 goals in Serie A and 26 in all competitions. Despite his brilliance, frustration grew, and Crespo left for Lazio in the summer for a then-world record fee. The season began with silverware as Parma defeated AC Milan to win the Supercoppa Italiana, a rare highlight in an otherwise inconsistent campaign. Their cup performances were disappointing, with early exits in both the Coppa Italia (Round of 16) and the UEFA Champions League (third qualifying round), while their UEFA Cup journey ended in the fourth round. The summer transfer window brought upheaval. Crespo’s departure to Lazio saw midfielders Matías Almeyda and Sérgio Conceição arrive in exchange, while Parma successfully held on to key players Gianluigi Buffon and Lilian Thuram, maintaining hope for a stronger challenge in 2000–01.
