The 1999–2000 season was a difficult one for Juventus, marked by a series of unfortunate events that prevented them from clinching the Serie A title despite being at the top for much of the season. Under the management of Carlo Ancelotti, Juventus led the league for the majority of the campaign, with Filippo Inzaghi emerging as the top scorer for the club. However, their form drastically faltered in the final stretch of the season. In their penultimate match against Parma, Juventus held a 1–0 lead, but a controversial refereeing decision overshadowed the result. Fabio Cannavaro appeared to score the equalizing goal for Parma in stoppage time, but it was controversially disallowed by referee Massimo De Santis for a perceived foul, despite strong protests from the Parma players. On the final day of the season, Lazio, Juventus’ title rivals, secured a comfortable 3–0 win against Reggina. Meanwhile, Juventus traveled to Perugia, where heavy rainfall delayed the match. Despite the challenging conditions, the match went ahead, with referee Pierluigi Collina allowing the game to continue. The rain and delay added to the tension, as Juventus needed to win to claim the title. However, Juventus’ efforts were thwarted by a goal from Alessandro Calori, and they could not recover, losing 1–0 and finishing second in Serie A. This marked a bitter end to a season where they had been in control for most of the campaign. Adding to their disappointment, Juventus also faced setbacks in Europe. Despite winning the UEFA Intertoto Cup, their UEFA Cup campaign ended early with a humiliating 4–0 aggregate loss to Celta Vigo in the fourth round, marking their earliest exit from European competitions since 1987.
