The 1990–91 season was a mixed but ultimately rewarding campaign for F.C. Internazionale Milano. Under the guidance of Giovanni Trapattoni, Inter was initially viewed as one of the favorites for the Serie A title, boasting a talented squad that included three players who were part of the victorious 1990 FIFA World Cup-winning team. Despite these high expectations, the team’s title challenge faltered late in the season due to unexpected losses to Genoese sides in May, leaving Inter to finish third in the league. In European competition, however, Inter found redemption. After overcoming Rapid Wien and Aston Villa with dramatic comebacks, they advanced through further rounds against Atalanta and Sporting Lisboa to reach the final of the UEFA Cup. The climax of the season came with a 2–1 aggregate victory over Roma in the final, securing Inter their first-ever UEFA Cup triumph and salvaging an otherwise underwhelming domestic season. Lothar Matthäus was pivotal throughout the campaign, leading the team’s scoring charts with 16 goals in Serie A and 23 across all competitions, further solidifying his status as one of the era’s most influential players. The UEFA Cup victory was a significant achievement for Trapattoni’s side, affirming their quality on the European stage.
