In the 2004–05 season, Inter appointed Roberto Mancini as their new head coach. The team had a mixed performance in Serie A, drawing many matches but ultimately finishing in 3rd place. They were more successful in cup competitions, winning the Coppa Italia by defeating Roma 3–0 on aggregate and reaching the Champions League quarter-finals, where they were eliminated by city rivals AC Milan. A dramatic 3–2 comeback win over Sampdoria was a season highlight. Adriano was the top scorer, netting 16 goals in the league and 28 in all competitions.
