The 2002–03 season was a pivotal one for Inter Milan, marked by significant changes and an intense campaign in both domestic and European competitions. The club began the season by selling Ronaldo to Real Madrid and strengthening its squad with high-profile signings such as Hernán Crespo, Fabio Cannavaro, Matías Almeyda, and Domenico Morfeo. Crespo joined Christian Vieri to form a powerful attacking duo, with Crespo excelling in the UEFA Champions League and Vieri dominating Serie A matches. Crespo’s form was critical to Inter’s strong start in the Champions League, but an injury sidelined him for several weeks. During his absence, Inter struggled in key fixtures, even with Gabriel Batistuta brought in as a replacement. One of these losses was against Juventus, which allowed the Turin side to solidify their bid for the league title. In Europe, Inter reached the quarter-finals after finishing second in their group. They advanced past Valencia on away goals after a 1–0 win at home and a 2–1 loss in Spain. Crespo returned from injury during this period, but Vieri suffered a setback of his own. Despite missing games, Vieri ended the season as Serie A’s top scorer with 24 goals. Inter’s Champions League campaign came to a heartbreaking end in the semi-finals against city rivals AC Milan. The two legs ended in a 1–1 aggregate draw, but Milan advanced to the final on away goals after Andriy Shevchenko’s strike in the first leg proved decisive. Meanwhile, in Serie A, Inter’s focus on European competition cost them vital points, including two draws late in the season, allowing Juventus to secure their second consecutive league title. Under the management of Héctor Cúper, Inter finished second in Serie A, reached the semi-finals of the Champions League, and exited the Coppa Italia in the Round of 16. Vieri’s 27 goals across all competitions were a standout contribution in an otherwise bittersweet season.
