The 1990–91 season was a mixed one for Associazione Sportiva Roma under manager Ottavio Bianchi. Although the team finished a disappointing 9th in Serie A, their performances in other competitions offered some solace. Roma triumphed in the Coppa Italia, securing their seventh title in a dramatic fashion. They won the two-legged final against Sampdoria, with a 3–1 victory at home and a crucial draw away at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris to lift the trophy. In the UEFA Cup, Roma reached the final, where they faced Inter Milan. Despite a solid effort in the return leg, where Ruggiero Rizzitelli scored, Roma were unable to overcome a 2–0 deficit from the first leg and lost out on the trophy. Roma’s league struggles in Serie A were mitigated by their success in cup competitions, but the 9th-place finish represented a significant underachievement for the club. Rudi Völler was the team’s top scorer, netting 11 goals in the league and 21 across all competitions, becoming a standout player despite Roma’s mixed season. The season marked a significant contrast between their domestic underperformance and European aspirations, with their UEFA Cup run ending in disappointment after a spirited effort.
