The 2011–12 season was Associazione Calcio Milan’s 78th season in Serie A and their 29th consecutive campaign in Italy’s top flight. Under head coach Massimiliano Allegri, Milan entered the season as defending Serie A champions and began with high expectations to secure a second straight title. The season kicked off with a triumph in the Supercoppa Italiana, where Milan defeated city rivals Internazionale 2–1 to claim the trophy. In Serie A, the Rossoneri started slowly but recovered to build a four-point lead over Juventus by March. However, the final stretch of the campaign proved to be their undoing. In the last nine league matches, Milan managed only five wins, alongside two draws and two losses, faltering as Juventus went on an extraordinary run of ten wins and one draw in their final eleven games. This late surge by Juventus secured them the title, with Milan finishing four points behind in second place. In European competition, Milan participated in the UEFA Champions League. After advancing past the group stage and defeating Arsenal in the Round of 16, including a 4–0 victory at San Siro, they faced Barcelona in the quarter-finals. Despite a valiant effort, they were eliminated by the Catalan side, losing 3–1 on aggregate after a 0–0 first-leg draw. Domestically, Milan also competed in the Coppa Italia, reaching the semi-finals. However, they were eliminated by Juventus, suffering a 4–3 aggregate defeat. This marked another instance where their fierce rivals outshone them during the season. Zlatan Ibrahimović was the standout player for Milan, finishing as both the league’s and the team’s top scorer with 28 Serie A goals and 35 across all competitions. Despite his stellar performances, the season ended on a bittersweet note, as Milan saw the departures of several club legends, including Alessandro Nesta, Clarence Seedorf, Gennaro Gattuso, and Filippo Inzaghi. Their exits symbolized the end of an era and the beginning of a transitional phase for the club.
