The 2002–03 season was one of triumph for Associazione Calcio Milan, as the club achieved success both domestically and internationally. Milan won their sixth UEFA Champions League title, defeating Juventus in a tense all-Italian final that ended 0–0 before Milan triumphed on penalties. Additionally, they won the Coppa Italia, overcoming Roma in the final. Despite these successes, Milan finished third in Serie A, missing out on the title and the chance to complete a treble, as they were overtaken by Juventus and Inter. This season was marked by significant arrivals to the squad, most notably Alessandro Nesta, signed for €31 million from Lazio, marking Milan’s most expensive transfer of the summer. He strengthened a defense that was already among Europe’s most formidable. Other key signings included Clarence Seedorf from Inter Milan for €29 million, who added versatility to Milan’s midfield, and Jon Dahl Tomasson, a backup striker to Andriy Shevchenko and Filippo Inzaghi. Rivaldo, the Brazilian superstar, had a more peripheral role in Serie A but played a crucial part in Milan’s Champions League campaign. Milan’s manager, Carlo Ancelotti, employed the 4–4–2 diamond formation, a strategy that allowed him to utilize Andrea Pirlo as a deep-lying playmaker and Rui Costa as an attacking midfielder. This formation worked effectively with the hard-working midfield duo of Seedorf and Gennaro Gattuso, contributing to Milan’s overall success during the season.
